It is often said that devotion is the most important element of worship. However, if certain rituals and rules are not followed properly during worship, or if some mistakes are made unknowingly, it can lead to negative effects instead of blessings.
Lord Shiva's worship is considered very simple, but there are some guidelines to follow. If not followed, one might unknowingly invite troubles, instead of peace and prosperity.
In this article, we will understand which mistakes to avoid while performing Shiv Puja and why they can be harmful.
(1) Do Not Offer Turmeric on Shivling
Mistake:
Many people unknowingly offer turmeric on the Shivling.
Why avoid it:
Turmeric symbolizes feminine energy and is associated with Goddess worship. The Shivling symbolizes masculine energy. Offering turmeric can disturb this spiritual balance, possibly leading to obstacles in life.
(2) Do Not Offer Tamsic Items
Mistake:
Sometimes people offer tamsic (impure or heavy) items such as saffron, musk, vermillion, or turmeric-mixed rice during Shiv Puja.
Why avoid it:
Only pure, sattvic (spiritually pure) items should be offered to Lord Shiva. Tamsic offerings may increase negativity, anger, and ego, which is contrary to the purpose of worship.
(3) Do Not Offer Tulsi (Basil) Leaves
Mistake:
Some devotees mistakenly offer Tulsi leaves to the Shivling.
Why avoid it:
According to mythology, Tulsi Mata is the consort of Lord Vishnu. There is an ancient story of a curse related to this, making Tulsi leaves inappropriate for Shiv Puja. Offering them may displease Lord Shiva.
(4) Do Not Offer Broken Bilva Leaves
Mistake:
Bilva (Bael) leaves are very dear to Lord Shiva, but people sometimes offer broken or torn Bilva leaves.
Why avoid it:
You should always offer three-leaf (trifoliate), clean, unbroken Bilva leaves. Offering damaged leaves is inauspicious and may attract negative karma instead of blessings.
(5) Do Not Perform Water Abhishek on Shivling at Night
Mistake:
Some people perform Jalabhishek (water offering) on the Shivling at night.
Why avoid it:
Except on special occasions like Maha Shivratri, it is not advisable to offer water to Shivling at night. Doing so can cause family disputes, mental stress, and health issues.
(6) Do Not Install Large Shivling at Home
Mistake:
Some people install large Shivlings at home.
Why avoid it:
At home, the Shivling should not be larger than the size of your thumb. Large Shivlings require elaborate and regular worship. Without proper rituals, the energy can become unbalanced, causing problems like domestic strife or financial loss.
(7) Do Not Pour Water Using a Conch (Shankh)
Mistake:
Many devotees pour water from a conch on the Shivling.
Why avoid it:
According to tradition, the conch is associated with Lord Vishnu and is not used for Shivling Abhishek. Using it is considered disrespectful and may spoil the spiritual efficacy of the ritual.
(8) Do Not Worship a Damaged Shivling
Mistake:
Sometimes, people continue worshipping a broken or cracked Shivling.
Why avoid it:
Worshipping a damaged Shivling is forbidden. It is believed to bring bad luck and various obstacles. If your Shivling gets damaged, you should properly dispose of it and install a new one.
(9) Do Not Perform Puja in an Impure State
Mistake:
Some people perform Puja without taking a bath, while wearing shoes, or in an unclean state.
Why avoid it:
Shiv Puja is a very pure spiritual act. Performing it in an impure state negates the positive effects of the ritual and may even attract negative consequences. Always perform Puja after cleansing your body and mind.
(10) Do Not Forget to Perform the Closing Prayers (Kshama Prarthana)
Mistake:
Many people hurriedly complete their Puja and skip the final prayers, especially the Kshama Prarthana (asking for forgiveness).
Why avoid it:
Closing prayers are very important to seek forgiveness for any mistakes committed knowingly or unknowingly during the ritual. Without this, your Puja remains incomplete.
(11) Do Not Wipe the Shivling Dry
Mistake:
Some devotees wipe the Shivling dry after performing Abhishek.
Why avoid it:
It is auspicious to let water remain on the Shivling after Abhishek. Wiping it dry is seen as disrespectful.
(12) Do Not Offer Jasmine or Kevda Flowers
Mistake: People sometimes offer jasmine (Chameli) or Kevda flowers during Shiv Puja.
Why avoid it : These flowers are not favored by Lord Shiva and offering them may bring adverse effects. It is always better to use flowers like white lotus, Dhatura, or Bilva leaves.
The key to successful Shiv Puja is devotion and purity. If you worship Lord Shiva with a pure heart and sincere devotion, He will surely forgive minor mistakes. But repeatedly making the above mistakes or ignoring them may attract problems instead of blessings.
Shiva is a highly compassionate deity, but worship must be done with respect for the rituals and traditions. When done correctly, Shiv Puja can bring peace of mind, prosperity, and happiness in your life.

यह बिल्कुल सही कहा जाता है कि भक्ति में भावना ही सबसे महत्वपूर्ण है, लेकिन यदि पूजा-पाठ में कुछ विशेष नियमों का पालन न किया जाए या अनजाने में कुछ गलतियाँ कर दी जाएं, तो उसका विपरीत प्रभाव भी हो सकता है। शिव पूजा अत्यंत सरल मानी जाती है, परंतु कुछ ऐसी बातें हैं, जिनका ध्यान न रखने पर नकारात्मक परिणाम या अनचाहे कष्ट आ सकते हैं।
इस लेख में हम विस्तार से जानेंगे कि शिव पूजा करते समय कौन-कौन सी गलतियाँ नहीं करनी चाहिए और क्यों ये नुकसानदायक हो सकती हैं।
(1) शिवलिंग पर हल्दी न चढ़ाएं
कई लोग अनजाने में शिवलिंग पर हल्दी चढ़ा देते हैं।
हल्दी को देवी स्वरूप माना जाता है और यह सौम्यता, स्त्रैण ऊर्जा (feminine energy) की प्रतीक है। शिवलिंग पर हल्दी चढ़ाना वर्जित माना गया है क्योंकि शिवलिंग में पुरुषत्व (masculine energy) का प्रतीक माना जाता है। इससे पूजा में ऊर्जा का असंतुलन हो सकता है, जिससे जीवन में अवरोध उत्पन्न हो सकते हैं।
(2) तामसिक वस्तुएं शिवलिंग पर न चढ़ाएं
गलती:
कई बार लोग पूजा में तामसिक वस्तुएं जैसे केसर, कस्तूरी, सिंदूर, चावल में हल्दी मिलाकर चढ़ा देते हैं।
क्यों नहीं करें:
शिवलिंग पर केवल सात्विक और शुद्ध सामग्रियां ही चढ़ाई जाती हैं। तामसिक वस्तुएं चढ़ाने से मन में क्रोध, अहंकार और नकारात्मकता बढ़ सकती है।
(3) तुलसी के पत्ते न चढ़ाएं
गलती: कुछ लोग अनजाने में तुलसी के पत्ते भी शिवलिंग पर चढ़ा देते हैं।
क्यों नहीं करें:
पौराणिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार, तुलसी माता को भगवान विष्णु की पत्नी माना जाता है। शिव और तुलसी के बीच एक विशेष कथा है जिसके कारण शिवलिंग पर तुलसी चढ़ाना वर्जित है। ऐसा करने से भगवान शिव अप्रसन्न होते हैं।
(4) टूटी हुई बिल्व पत्र न चढ़ाएं
गलती: बिल्व पत्र शिव को अत्यंत प्रिय हैं, लेकिन कभी-कभी लोग टूटे-फूटे या कटे हुए बिल्व पत्र चढ़ा देते हैं।
क्यों नहीं करें:
शिवलिंग पर हमेशा त्रिदली (तीन पत्तों वाले), पूर्ण, स्वच्छ और बिना छेद वाले बिल्व पत्र चढ़ाने चाहिए। दोषयुक्त बिल्व पत्र चढ़ाने से पुण्य की बजाय दोष लगता है।
(5) रात्रि में शिवलिंग को जलाभिषेक न करें
गलती: कई लोग रात्रि में विशेष रूप से जलाभिषेक करते हैं।
क्यों नहीं करें:
रात्रि काल में शिवलिंग पर जल चढ़ाना विशेष परिस्थितियों (जैसे शिवरात्रि या विशेष अनुष्ठान) को छोड़कर सामान्य रूप से वर्जित माना गया है। इससे वंश में कलह, मानसिक तनाव और रोगों की वृद्धि हो सकती है।
(6) घर में बड़े शिवलिंग की स्थापना न करें
गलती: कई लोग घर में बड़े शिवलिंग की स्थापना कर देते हैं।
क्यों नहीं करें:
घर में अंगुष्ठ (thumb) के आकार से बड़ा शिवलिंग नहीं रखना चाहिए। बड़े शिवलिंग के लिए विधिपूर्वक और नियमित पूजा अनिवार्य होती है। यदि नियमित पूजा न की जाए तो नकारात्मक ऊर्जा बढ़ सकती है, जिससे गृहक्लेश, आर्थिक हानि या मानसिक तनाव उत्पन्न हो सकता है।
(7) शिवलिंग पर शंख से जल न चढ़ाएं
गलती: कई भक्त शंख से शिवलिंग पर जल चढ़ाते हैं।
क्यों नहीं करें:
पौराणिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार, शंख भगवान विष्णु का प्रिय पात्र है और इससे शिवलिंग पर जल अर्पण करना वर्जित माना जाता है। इससे पूजा दोषपूर्ण मानी जाती है।
(8) खंडित शिवलिंग की पूजा न करें
गलती: कभी-कभी मंदिर में या घर में खंडित (टूटे हुए) शिवलिंग की पूजा लोग करते रहते हैं।
क्यों नहीं करें:
खंडित शिवलिंग की पूजा निषिद्ध है। ऐसा करने से दुर्भाग्य बढ़ सकता है और जीवन में अनेक बाधाएं आ सकती हैं। यदि शिवलिंग खंडित हो जाए तो उसे विधिपूर्वक विसर्जित कर नया शिवलिंग स्थापित करना चाहिए।
(9) अशुद्ध होकर पूजा न करें
गलती: कुछ लोग स्नान न करके, जूते पहनकर या अपवित्र अवस्था में पूजा कर बैठते हैं।
क्यों नहीं करें:
शिव पूजा अत्यंत पवित्र क्रिया है। अशुद्ध अवस्था में पूजा करने से पूजा का फल प्राप्त नहीं होता बल्कि विपरीत फल मिलता है। सदा स्वच्छ वस्त्र पहनकर और मानसिक शुद्धता के साथ ही शिव की पूजा करें।
(10) शिव पूजा में द्वारपाल मंत्र या क्षमा प्रार्थना करना न भूलें
गलती: कई लोग जल्दी में पूजा समाप्त कर देते हैं और अंत में न क्षमा प्रार्थना करते हैं न द्वारपाल मंत्र।
क्यों नहीं करें:
पूजा के अंत में क्षमा प्रार्थना करना अत्यंत आवश्यक है, जिससे यदि अनजाने में कोई भूल हुई हो तो उसके लिए क्षमा मिल सके। ऐसा न करने पर पूजा अधूरी रह जाती है।
(11) शिवलिंग को पोंछकर न सुखाएं
गलती: कुछ लोग शिवलिंग को जलाभिषेक के बाद कपड़े से पोंछ देते हैं।
क्यों नहीं करें:
शिवलिंग पर जल रहने देना शुभ माना जाता है। उसे पोंछना एक प्रकार से अपमान माना जाता है।
(12) शिवलिंग पर चमेली का फूल न चढ़ाएं
गलती: कई बार लोग पूजा में चमेली या केवड़ा के फूल चढ़ा देते हैं।
क्यों नहीं करें:
शिव को ये पुष्प प्रिय नहीं माने जाते। विशेषतः केवड़ा का फूल वर्जित माना गया है। इससे पूजा का विपरीत प्रभाव आ सकता है।
शिव पूजा में सबसे महत्वपूर्ण तत्व है श्रद्धा और शुद्धता। यदि आप सच्चे मन से शिव की पूजा करेंगे तो भगवान शिव आपके समस्त दोष क्षमा कर सकते हैं, लेकिन जान-बूझकर या अनजाने में उपरोक्त गलतियाँ करने से पूजा का फल बाधित हो सकता है।
शिव की पूजा जितनी सरल है, उतनी ही नियमबद्ध भी है। सही विधि-विधान से पूजा करने पर मानसिक शांति, आर्थिक समृद्धि और परिवार में सुख-शांति प्राप्त होती है।
