हिंदू धर्म में तुलसी का विशेष धार्मिक और आध्यात्मिक महत्व है। तुलसी को माता, देवी और भगवान विष्णु की प्रिय मानी जाती है। तुलसी के पौधे को घर में लगाना अत्यंत शुभ माना जाता है। लेकिन क्या आप जानते हैं कि तुलसी माता वास्तव में कौन थीं और उन्हें तुलसी क्यों बनना पड़ा ? इस पौराणिक कथा के पीछे एक बहुत ही रोचक और भावनात्मक कहानी छिपी हुई है।
• तुलसी माता का जन्म
प्राचीन काल में एक बहुत ही शक्तिशाली दैत्यराज 'जलंधर' था। जलंधर का जन्म समुद्र और भगवान शिव के क्रोध से हुआ था। उसकी पत्नी 'वृंदा' थी, जो अत्यंत पवित्र, पतिव्रता और भगवान विष्णु की अनन्य भक्त थी। वृंदा का तप, भक्ति और सतीत्व इतना शक्तिशाली था कि उसके कारण जलंधर अपराजेय हो गया था। देवता और त्रिदेव (ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश) भी उसे पराजित नहीं कर सकते थे।
• जलंधर की शक्ति का रहस्य
जलंधर की शक्ति का मुख्य कारण उसकी पत्नी वृंदा का पतिव्रता धर्म था। वृंदा ने अपने तप और सतीत्व के बल पर जलंधर की रक्षा की थी। जब जलंधर युद्ध करता था, तब वृंदा अपने पति की लंबी आयु और विजय के लिए तपस्या करती थी।
• देवताओं की चिंता
जलंधर का अत्याचार बढ़ता जा रहा था। वह स्वर्ग लोक पर भी अधिकार करने की कोशिश करने लगा। देवता घबरा गए और भगवान विष्णु से सहायता की प्रार्थना की। लेकिन कोई भी तब तक जलंधर को मार नहीं सकता था, जब तक कि वृंदा का सतीत्व भंग न हो जाए।
• भगवान विष्णु की लीला
देवताओं की रक्षा के लिए भगवान विष्णु ने एक योजना बनाई। उन्होंने जलंधर का रूप धारण किया और वृंदा के पास पहुँचे। वृंदा ने उन्हें अपने पति समझकर उनका स्वागत किया और उनके चरण धोए। जैसे ही वृंदा ने उनका स्पर्श किया, उनका पतिव्रता धर्म भंग हो गया। उसी क्षण भगवान शिव ने जलंधर का वध कर दिया।
• वृंदा का क्रोध और श्राप
जब वृंदा को सच्चाई का पता चला कि यह उनके पति नहीं बल्कि भगवान विष्णु थे, तो वह बहुत आहत हुईं। उन्होंने भगवान विष्णु को श्राप दे दिया:
"हे विष्णु! आपने मेरे पतिव्रता धर्म को भंग किया है। मैं आपको पत्थर का रूप धारण करने का श्राप देती हूँ।"
इसी कारण भगवान विष्णु ने 'शालिग्राम' रूप धारण किया। शालिग्राम पत्थर को विष्णु स्वरूप माना जाता है।
वृंदा ने अपने पति के वियोग में अपनी देह का त्याग कर दिया।
• तुलसी का जन्म
भगवान विष्णु ने वृंदा के त्याग और भक्ति से प्रसन्न होकर उन्हें आशीर्वाद दिया,
"हे वृंदा! तुम धरती पर तुलसी के रूप में जन्म लोगी। तुम सदा मेरी प्रिय रहोगी। मैं बिना तुम्हारे पत्तों के किसी भी पूजा को स्वीकार नहीं करूँगा।"
इस प्रकार वृंदा देवी धरती पर तुलसी के पौधे के रूप में प्रकट हुईं। तब से तुलसी को 'विष्णु प्रिया' कहा जाता है।
• तुलसी विवाह की परंपरा
कार्तिक मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी को 'तुलसी विवाह' का पर्व मनाया जाता है। इस दिन तुलसी माता का विवाह भगवान शालिग्राम (विष्णु स्वरूप) के साथ विधिवत सम्पन्न होता है। इसे दिव्य और शुभ माना जाता है। तुलसी विवाह के बाद ही हिंदू समाज में विवाह का शुभ मुहूर्त प्रारंभ होता है।
• धार्मिक महत्व
(1) विष्णु प्रिय: तुलसी को भगवान विष्णु की पत्नी के समान सम्मान प्राप्त है।
(2) पवित्रता: तुलसी का पौधा घर में लगाने से पवित्रता, शुद्धता और सकारात्मक ऊर्जा बनी रहती है।
(3) पाप नाशिनी: तुलसी के स्पर्श मात्र से पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं।
(4) स्वास्थ्य लाभ: आयुर्वेद में तुलसी को औषधि के रूप में अत्यंत उपयोगी माना गया है।

तुलसी माता की कथा हमें कई महत्वपूर्ण शिक्षाएं देती है:
(6) पत्नीत्व और भक्ति: वृंदा का अपने पति के प्रति समर्पण अद्भुत था। उनका विश्वास और तप असाधारण था।
(7) धर्म और कर्तव्य: धर्म के मार्ग में कई बार कठिनाइयाँ आती हैं, लेकिन अंततः सच्चाई की ही जीत होती है।
(8) भक्ति का पुरस्कार: वृंदा ने अपने जीवन में कठिन तप और भक्ति की थी, और भगवान विष्णु ने उन्हें अमरत्व का वरदान देकर तुलसी बना दिया।
तुलसी माता केवल एक पौधा नहीं बल्कि देवी का स्वरूप हैं। उनका अस्तित्व प्रेम, भक्ति, त्याग और समर्पण का प्रतीक है। आज भी हर हिंदू घर में तुलसी का पौधा लगाया जाता है, और प्रतिदिन उनकी पूजा कर घर में सुख, शांति और समृद्धि की कामना की जाती है।
इस प्रकार वृंदा का जीवन भले ही दुखद रहा हो, लेकिन उनका त्याग और भक्ति उन्हें अमर कर गए। उनके बिना भगवान विष्णु की पूजा भी अधूरी मानी जाती है। यही कारण है कि तुलसी माता की कथा आज भी लोगों के हृदय में श्रद्धा और आस्था के साथ जीवित है।

Planting Tulsi at home is considered highly auspicious. But do you know who Tulsi Mata truly was and why she became a sacred plant? There is a deep, emotional, and fascinating story behind this belief.
• Birth of Tulsi Mata
In ancient times, there was a very powerful demon king named Jalandhar. He was born from the ocean and Lord Shiva’s wrath. His wife was Vrinda, a deeply pious, devoted, and chaste woman who was also an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu.
Vrinda’s devotion, chastity, and penance were so powerful that Jalandhar became invincible. Not even the trinity—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva—could defeat him because of the strength of Vrinda's virtuousness.
• The Secret of Jalandhar’s Power
Jalandhar’s strength was directly tied to Vrinda’s unwavering fidelity. Her penance and purity protected him in every battle. Whenever Jalandhar went to war, Vrinda would perform severe penance, praying for his safety and victory.
• Concern Among the Gods
Jalandhar’s tyranny grew excessively. He even tried to conquer heaven (Swarga Lok). The gods were terrified and sought help from Lord Vishnu. However, Jalandhar could not be killed until Vrinda’s chastity was broken.
• Lord Vishnu’s Divine Play (Leela)
To protect the cosmos and the gods, Lord Vishnu devised a plan. He disguised himself as Jalandhar and appeared before Vrinda. Believing him to be her husband, Vrinda welcomed him, washed his feet, and performed her duties as a devoted wife.
The moment Vrinda touched Lord Vishnu, her chastity was broken unknowingly. At that exact time, Lord Shiva was able to kill Jalandhar.
• Vrinda’s Curse to Lord Vishnu
When Vrinda realized that the person before her was not her husband but Lord Vishnu, she was deeply hurt and enraged. In her grief and anger, Vrinda cursed Lord Vishnu:
“O Vishnu! You have broken my chastity. From this day, you shall turn into a stone.”
As a result of this curse, Lord Vishnu assumed the form of Shaligram, a sacred black stone that is still worshipped today as his symbol.
Vrinda, overwhelmed with sorrow, gave up her life.
• The Birth of Tulsi
Pleased with Vrinda’s unwavering devotion, sacrifice, and purity, Lord Vishnu blessed her:
“O Vrinda! You shall take birth on Earth as the sacred plant Tulsi. You will always be my beloved. No worship or offering to me will be complete without Tulsi leaves.”
Thus, Vrinda transformed into the Tulsi plant, which became eternally sacred and beloved to Lord Vishnu. From then on, Tulsi is also called ‘Vishnu Priya’, meaning ‘Beloved of Vishnu’.
• The Tradition of Tulsi Vivah
On the Ekadashi (11th day) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) of the Hindu month of Kartik, the festival of Tulsi Vivah is celebrated. On this day, Tulsi Mata is ceremonially married to Lord Shaligram (Vishnu).
• This sacred event marks the beginning of the Hindu wedding season, symbolizing auspiciousness, harmony, and divine blessings.
